8 steps to more profit

Over a 12 month period we would expect a farm business to have gone through the 8 steps shown above.   For more information about each step, please see the detail below.  You can follow farmers, Sarah and Tim's journey, how their Connector, Sarah, helped them and how the Facilitator, Ben, got involved.

An Idea, An Opportunity, A Challenge

New Zealand red meat farmers are some of the most innovative in the world, constantly looking for new ways to do things. However at times, having a bit of support to make sure the ideas are worth investing time and effort into would be helpful.  RMPP Action Network has been created to give farmers the confidence to turn those great ideas into action.

Farmer Connected

There are a few ways farmers will connect in with RMPP Action Network. They may form their own group, already be a part of a discussion group that they are looking to turn into an Action Group or they may be approached by a rural professional who is pulling together a group. For more information on how to connect click here.

Action Group Formed

Once the farmers have come together an Action Group is formed.  The Action Group will consist of between 7-9 farm businesses who have a shared area of focus.  It could be a broad topic such as breeding and genetics or could be very specific such as looking at whether fodder beet is the right crop to be growing in a certain part of the country.  The group will decide which trained facilitator they would like to use. The facilitator will then guide the farmers in deciding how they want to run their Action Group.

Extension Plan and Farm Action Plan drawn up

With the help of their trained facilitator, an Action Group will create an Extension Plan.  It will outline what objectives the Action Group want to achieve, activities they plan on running and an approximate cost of this.  Each farm business will also create a short farm action plan with their own goals, objectives and actions relevant to their farm business.

Extension Plan Approved

The extension plan will be sent to RMPP for review and approval.  This initiates the availability of their Action Group funding.

Planned Activities Occur

Once the plan is approved by RMPP, the Action Group can start!  These activities could be a field day, workshop, farm visit, tour of a high performing farm, the list goes on.  It all depends on what the farmers have decided they want to do in their extension plan.

Review of Extension Plan

After 12 months the Action Group will review their original extension plan and decide what they want to look at for the following year.  They will also complete a short survey and review how their facilitator has performed.  Each farm business will be expected to contribute $800 into their fund at the beginning of the second year.

Action on-farm

The purpose of RMPP Action Network is to give farmers the confidence to put their good ideas into action. An individual farmer's farm action plan may take longer to implement than others depending on what topics they have chosen to look at.
